IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is a fertility treatment where eggs are retrieved from the ovaries, fertilized with sperm in a lab, and the resulting embryo is transferred to the uterus. The process typically takes 4-6 weeks per cycle.

A full IVF cycle typically takes about 4-6 weeks, starting from ovarian stimulation to embryo transfer. This includes 8-14 days of hormone injections, egg retrieval, fertilization, and embryo transfer 3-5 days later.

IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) involves placing sperm directly into the uterus during ovulation, while IVF involves fertilizing eggs outside the body in a lab. IVF is more invasive and expensive but has higher success rates, especially for severe infertility cases.

IVF can be considered at any age after fertility issues are diagnosed. However, success rates decline with age - women under 35 have the highest success rates (40-50%), while women over 40 have lower success rates (10-20%). It's recommended to consult a fertility specialist early.

IVF involves some discomfort but is generally not extremely painful. Egg retrieval is done under sedation or anesthesia, so you won't feel pain during the procedure. You may experience mild cramping, bloating, and discomfort from hormone injections, but these are usually manageable with medication.
